We were up in the north east of the country shooting a hotel in Dandong recently which sits on the banks of the Yalu river right across from North Korea. Hiring a small boat we were able to get quite close the North Korean shoreline and catch a small glimpse of what life is like inside this very secretive country. We came away from it truly believing all the stories of hardship and poverty. The contrast was especially apparent when compared to China which itself was in a similar state 50 years ago. The last image shows this imbalance perfectly, on the right is Dandong and the city of Sinuiju with a population of 350,000 is the darkness on the left.
